SC ALLOWS MARIA RESSA TO TRAVEL ABROAD ANEW FOR SEVERAL SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS

The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday said it allowed veteran journalist and Rappler CEO Maria Ressa to travel abroad anew for several speaking engagements.

The High Court said it allowed the veteran journalist to travel abroad from June 4 to 29, “subject to certain conditions.”

“Petitioner, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Rappler, is ordered to observe the sub judice rule and to refrain from making any comment on or discussing in public her case and other related matters,” the SC said.

“The Court also said that petitioner shall travel on the cash bond of P100,000 she previously posted pursuant to an earlier Resolution of the Court,” it added.

The SC also said Ressa is required to transmit the court an advice in writing for her return to the country within five days from her arrival.

Ressa is set to travel to Italy, Singapore, the United States of America, and Taiwan, according to the High Court.

“In all, the Court has granted petitioner's seven motions for travel abroad to visit 14 countries,” it added.

The SC earlier allowed Ressa to travel abroad from March 13 to April 1, 2023.

Last October, the Court of Appeals upheld the cyberlibel convictions of Ressa and former Rappler researcher Reynaldo Santos.

Santos had said they would appeal before the SC. The case was in connection with the 2012 article Rappler published that linked businessman Wilfredo Keng to human trafficking and drug smuggling, citing an intelligence report.—Richa Noriega/AOL, GMA Integrated News
